Beware of Spoofing Scams Targeting HHCU Members

Cybercriminals continue to evolve their tactics, and one method that is becoming increasingly common is spoofing. We want to ensure our members stay informed and protected by understanding how these scams work and what steps to take if you encounter them.

What is Spoofing?

Spoofing occurs when a scammer disguises their identity to appear as a trusted organization, business, or individual. They may manipulate phone numbers, email addresses, or websites so that the message looks legitimate.

Common Spoofing Tactics

Members have reported several types of spoofing attempts, including:

Phone Number Spoofing

Scammers can make a call appear as if it is coming from a legitimate phone number, even one that belongs to a trusted organization such as HHCU. They may claim there is suspicious activity on your account and try to pressure you into providing personal information.

Email Spoofing

Fraudulent emails may look nearly identical to official communications, using logos, formatting, and sender names that mimic legitimate businesses. These messages often include urgent requests or links designed to capture your login credentials.

Website Spoofing

Some attackers create fake websites that closely resemble real ones. If you enter your login information or personal data on these sites, scammers can capture that information.

Warning Signs to Watch For:

  • Unexpected calls, texts, or emails requesting personal or financial information
  • Urgent or threatening language demanding immediate action
  • Links directing you to unfamiliar or slightly misspelled websites
  • Requests for passwords, verification codes, or account numbers

How to Protect Yourself

  • Never share personal or account information in response to unsolicited calls, emails, or messages.
  • Verify the source by contacting the organization directly using a trusted phone number or website.
  • Do not click suspicious links or download attachments from unknown senders.
  • Enable security features such as multi-factor authentication whenever available.

What to Do if You Suspect a Spoofing Attempt

If you receive a suspicious call, message, or email claiming to be from our organization or another trusted source:

  1. Do not provide any personal information.
  2. Hang up or delete the message.
  3. Contact us or the organization that’s being impersonated directly using official contact information.
  4. Report the incident so others can be warned.
